Message from RADM(NS) Lui Tuck Yew
I am pleased that Singapore is presenting the SINGAPORE SUPERGARDEN at the Venice Biennale. SINGAPORE SUPERGARDEN showcases the rising design culture that has taken root in our city-state. It represents the inspirations and thoughts of these young designers as they become a part of the global design discourse. Importantly, SINGAPORE SUPERGARDEN depicts the cross-collaborative design landscape that is emerging in Singapore today.

In Singapore, the power of design is becoming more apparent. Findings from the recent Design Awareness Index Study indicate that in the last three years, Singaporeans have a growing appreciation of the importance of design and an increasingly positive attitude towards design. They have also been proactively acquiring more knowledge and expertise in the field and engaging in in-depth design conversations.

The business of design has also come to the forefront. Entrepreneurs based in Singapore appreciate how good design can contribute to business success and performance. The 2007 National Design Industry Study conducted by Ernst & Young showed that 44 per cent of businesses acknowledge that design gives them a competitive edge, up from 32 per cent in 2005. In addition, a growing number of businesses that use design services have invested in in-house designers or established design capability to support their business needs. Singapore has also moved up the ranks of the Design Competitiveness Report, establishing itself in 16th place in 2005.

Beyond economic contributions, design is all about communication and the sharing of ideas and inspirations. I believe that through the SINGAPORE SUPERGARDEN, people in Venice and from around the world will be able to better understand and be a part of the Singapore design journey.

It gives me great pleasure to invite you to experience the spirit of Singapore design through the eyes of this new generation of innovators. They have articulated their inspirations and conception processes in order to share their design experience with the world.
